"Last July, a crew gathered along the San Francisco Embarcadero to watch as SF
Port personnel detached a series of concrete tiles from the waterfront wall
they’d been attached to for three years and hoisted them to the bay’s surface.
Once lifeless, the textured gray tiles were now covered in festive streamers of
red-tinged Turkish towel and rainbow seaweed, hard nubbins of oysters and
limpets, and scampering crabs.
These life-supporting tiles represent the first stage of an ambitious pending
rebuild of San Francisco’s centenarian seawall that puts marine life first."
