'Okay, let's rip the bandaid off — "serverless" is pretty much a marketing term
designed to make us cloud junkies feel better about ourselves.
There are
always servers involved, just not ones you have to personally rack
and stack.
I was an early adopter of the serverless Kool-Aid. Lambda functions, API
Gateway, the promise of never thinking about infrastructure again — it was
intoxicating. No more patching servers, no capacity planning…developer
paradise, right?
Wrong. Turns out, I just traded one set of problems for another. Here's the
thing about serverless:
Vendor Lock-In on Steroids
Remember when you thought you were free from managing your own tin boxes? Think
again. With serverless, you've just swapped one master for another. Going
all-in on AWS Lambda, DynamoDB, or any of those proprietary services is like
checking into a luxury hotel where you can never leave.
Sure, those serverless tools seem seductively easy at first. A few clicks, some
magic configuration, and boom, your function works. But the moment you start
relying on those convenient AWS-specific features — advanced triggers, seamless
integrations, managed databases — you've handcuffed yourself.
Want to switch cloud providers or bring some functions in-house? Prepare for a
rewrite so painful it'll make you question your life choices. That "open"
Serverless Framework doesn't magically shield you from the underlying lock-in.
Suddenly, the promise of cloud portability goes up in smoke, and you're stuck
paying whatever AWS decides to charge.'
