We so frequently under-rate the intelligence of our ancestors. At some point
they were no less intelligent than ourselves, they just didn't have the weight
of previous thought to help guide their own.
Mind you. I still don't think mathematics was necessarily used to create
Stonehenge. Given it took hundreds of years to create, all you would need is
someone to be ready around a solstice or equinox, then say "put a rock there".
