"After devoting decades to the industry, veteran animator Bev Chapman — whose
Emmy-honored work has helped bring hit shows like
The Simpsons and
Rugrats
to screens, and who spent nearly 10 years as a prop and effects designer on
Family Guy — last year faced a tough decision. Unable to find steady work in
California and pressured by the high cost of living, she relocated to Austin,
Texas in late 2025 to find employment outside of Toon Town. Months later, she
found herself again without a job, turning to gig work to try to make ends
meet. Now facing eviction, Chapman’s community has rallied around her and set
up a GoFundMe campaign to help her meet her basic needs.
It is a sad example of an increasingly familiar story, as the animation
business rides frequent waves of outsourcing, cutbacks and the rise of AI, and
confronts shifting demands from audiences, platforms and technology.
“Unfortunately, it’s a situation many artists in the animation industry are
finding themselves [in],” Chapman told
Animation Magazine in an interview
over email.
The artist, who has served in prop design, background, character design and
storyboard departments on projects ranging from
Rocko’s Modern Life to
The
Brave Little Toaster to
Kim Possible, gave us a bit more background on her
current difficult, if not uncommon, position."
