"Australia remains “grossly unprepared” for future pandemics, public health
experts have warned, as the world marks the five-year anniversary of Covid.
The disease exploded across the world in March 2020, throwing millions of
Australians into lockdown.
Public Health Association of Australia chief executive Terry Slevin warned on
Tuesday that another pandemic emergency like Covid was a matter of “when, not
if”.
“In the lead-up to Covid, we had SARS, swine flu and MERS,” Professor Slevin
said.
“Now we have avian influenza, Mpox, and Japanese encephalitis. It’s a matter of
when, not if, the next health emergency will occur.”
The association wants a permanent Australian Centre for Disease Control
bureaucracy to concentrate and co-ordinate the country’s future responses to
health emergencies.
“As a nation, we have failed to fully capitalise on lessons learned during the
last pandemic and build institutions to lead public health responses in
future,” Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases president Joseph Doyle
said.
In the US, the CDC governs large-scale emergencies and the Public Health
Association has called on both sides of politics to commit to an Australian
version in the run-up to the 2025 federal election."
