'Vattenfall has turned a decommissioned wind turbine into a “tiny house” in a
concept that the Swedish group claims could point to a new lease of life for
thousands of machines as they reach the end of their working life.
Vattenfall hired designers to come up with ways to repurpose nacelles as living
accommodation as an alternative to completely recycling their materials.
The end result uses a Vestas V80 2MW turbine that saw 20 years of operational
service in Austria, which the utility said was the first model introduced into
the market with a nacelle large enough to be practical for habitation and
comply with building codes.
Vattenfall director of innovation Thomas Hjort said: "We are looking for
innovative ways in which you can reuse materials from used turbines as
completely as possible. So, making something new from them with as few
modifications as possible... saves raw materials, energy consumption and in
this way we ensure that these materials are useful for many years after their
first working life."
Vattenfall and the concept’s designers reckon more than 10,000 similar sized
nacelles are in operation that will eventually need decommissioning.
The house, designed by Superuse and executed by Blade-Made and Woodwave, was
one of several wind-related concepts on display for Dutch Design Week."
