'The history of Australian-made video games is at risk of being lost if
technical and legal challenges can't be overcome, according to the National
Film and Sound Archive (NFSA).
A survey conducted by the NFSA of more than 50 cultural institutions worldwide
found there was an inconsistency in how games were preserved, that archivists
were under-resourced and the shutdown of digital platforms rendered older games
unplayable.
Patrick McIntyre, CEO of the NFSA, says the preservation of games faces a
number of cultural, technical and regulatory challenges.
In the first place, he says, a lot of people still don't understand why you
would want to preserve video games.
"Video games as a cultural industry is like a generation old now — that's when
you look back at history, that's when people start to take forms seriously," he
says.
And there are a myriad of technological challenges.'
