'BANGKOK — Hiding in plain sight beneath a palm tree, Janice Koehler eyes a
metal cage across a parking lot, sitting in the shadows of a Bangkok high-rise.
The trap is set. Her target lurks.
Suddenly, the cage door snaps shut. With a confidence that betrays that she has
done this nearly 700 times, she springs into action. A mottled grey cat with a
bent tail roars and cartwheels. Koehler coos and covers the cage with a towel
to calm the animal.
This is the 15th stray cat she has trapped this morning. By evening, a
veterinarian will begin to vaccinate and sterilize the animals. Within 24
hours, each will be returned to its turf in downtown Bangkok.
"I couldn't guess how many stray cats there are in Bangkok," says Koehler, a
Filipino expatriate whose volunteer venture Project Lumpi — named after a
dearly departed pet — aims to care for some of the city's many free-roaming
cats.
Tavida Kamolvej, deputy governor of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration,
which oversees health and social policies in the city, says there are about
70,000 stray cats in the urban area, plus 130,000 stray dogs "and about 500
monkeys."'
