"The modern research university teaches and conducts research. What’s supposed
to set universities apart is the way they link these activities. The
teaching-research nexus ensures that academics’ teaching is informed by their
research.
One unfortunate consequence of the link between teaching and research is the
power it grants to businesses — what I call Big Academic Publishing (BAP) —
that profit from scholarship. As universities find themselves under increasing
budgetary pressure, companies that publish our research reap impressive and
increasing profits. The teaching-research nexus extends this control over what
we teach.
As universities strive to offer courses that track changing student interests,
it’s time to explore the link between BAP’s profits and the challenge
confronting academic institutions to keep up with fast-changing times."
