'Lilongwe – June 2024 - As the sun sets in most villages in Malawi, the dawn of
darkness is also the dawn of anxiety for women, men, children, and particularly
school-going children. Only 23% of Malawi’s population has access to
electricity.

Many households must rely on battery-powered torches, candles, and kerosene
lamps for lighting inside the house.  The struggle for families to function in
a dark house, just to locate things inside the house, is unimaginable, let
alone maintaining security and performing food preparation.

School-going children must endure either studying in poor lighting or not
studying at all.

However, this situation is improving for many households due to the advent of
solar-powered lighting provided by the private sector with support from the
World Bank and other impact investors.

Rose John Soko, from Shuga Village in Chiradzulu district, Southern Malawi is
one of the people who installed a solar powered lighting facility under the
World Bank Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP) which supports the
Government of Malawi’s Off-Grid Market Development Fund (known as Ngwee Ngwee
Ngwee Funding Mechanism). The effort is making solar powered electricity
affordable for even low-income households.

The Ngwee Ngwee Ngwee Fund, meaning "bright" in the local language, Chichewa,
is an integral part of the MEAP, established to provide working capital and
grants, fostering the growth of the private sector-led Off-Grid solar segment
of the market. Under this mechanism, MEAP has forged partnerships with five
leading solar companies in Malawi, embarking on a connection campaign to
provide solar home systems to one million people.'
