"Half of Melbourne’s famous live music venues could be dead before a national
inquiry aimed at helping them finishes its work, with venue owners warning that
the inquiry will come too late to save renowned bars and pubs scrambling to
stay afloat.
A federal parliamentary inquiry was announced last week to examine challenges
plaguing the live music industry, following the shock cancellation of one of
Australia’s longest-running festivals,
Splendour in the Grass, amid poor
ticket sales.
The death knell for
Splendour followed the cancellations of a series of once
booming music festivals including
Groovin the Moo, and came off the back of a
spate of closures of some of Melbourne’s most-loved live music venues,
including Collingwood’s Bendigo Hotel.
Melbourne musician Christopher Windley, who owns Shotkickers, a live music bar
in High Street Thornbury, feared by the time the national inquiry was complete
a devastating number of venues across the city would have already gone under
and been forever lost.
“Half of our venues will be dead by then,” he said. “The thing that scares me
the most is that there’s not many venues left to play your first 10 gigs in
Melbourne. It will be really hard for young bands to get their break, which is
just so sad.”"
