"New born sea lion pups have been spotted by rivers, forests even golf courses,
after the best breeding season on record.
More than 30 pakake/sea lion pups, which has a status of nationally vulnerable,
have been born in Dunedin this breeding season,
The species’ population was estimated to be about 12,000 with the majority
living in the Subantarctic Islands, with a small number found in
Rakiura/Stewart Island, Southland and Dunedin.
There were thought to be 34 breeding females in Dunedin, with about 160-200 sea
lions in the region in total.
Department of Conservation Coastal Otago biodiversity ranger Jim Fyfe said of
the record pup breeding season: “We’re thrilled with this result, which is a
big jump from the 21 pups born last season”.
He noted how far the species had come since the first sea lion to breed on the
mainland, known as Mum, had her first pup in the city in 1993."
