"Regional communities prone to patchy electricity and power outages during
tourist peaks will have their supply shored up under the Allan government’s
first round of neighbourhood batteries.
Labor committed to build 100 community batteries before the 2022 election and
on Wednesday will announce the first 25 of these have been funded and will be
finished by June 2025.
They will be delivered across 20 towns and provide 4.2 megawatt hours of
storage in areas such as Queenscliff, Traralgon, and Yackandandah.
The biggest project approved is for seven 250 kilowatt-hour batteries on
Phillip Island, enough to power 100 homes for a day. No locations have been
decided, but they will be based around community hubs.
The electricity grid is strained at the tourist hotspot during holiday periods
and battery storage is increasingly being used to meet spikes in demand while
also capturing renewable energy generated during the middle of the day when it
is cheapest."
