"In 2005, Burundi embarked on an extraordinary mission to change its schooling
system to ensure that all children, especially girls, had access to quality
education. This small East African nation has since made impressive gains in
building the foundational skills of its children by simultaneously expanding
access to education and maintaining its quality at primary (elementary) level.
The introduction of free primary education in 2005 marked a turning point for
Burundi, a bold move that opened doors to education for countless children
across the country. The results have been remarkable, with the gross primary
enrollment rate standing at 118.5% (2022), a huge increase from 58% in 2000.
Gross enrollment in lower secondary (junior high school) education has surged
from 32% in 2010 to an encouraging 40.6% in 2022. During this period, the
number of years of schooling Burundian children have has increased from 6.4 to
7.6 years."
