"The River Mersey is making the 'greatest river recovery in Europe' despite
being dubbed biologically dead just forty years ago.
Last year, the results of the first survey of its kind in two decades showed a
huge increase in fish populations, suggesting the Mersey was finally recovering
from industrial pollution and sewage. Smooth-hound, bull huss sharks and starry
smooth-hound sharks are among five species found by anglers, between Howley
Weir in Warrington and Perch Rock, Wirral.
The sharks were among 37 fish species recorded by the Mersey Rivers Trust, more
than double the amount since the last survey in 2002 - when only 15 species
were recorded in the estuary.
Now, even more species have been found, with the iconic river continuing to
recover. New figures show that in 2023, 45 different kinds of fish found in the
river by The Mersey Estuary Species Hunt, a partnership between anglers and the
Mersey Rivers Trust."
