"TOKYO — Mitsubishi Chemical Group has developed technology that recycles
glass and metals from solar panels, reducing costs by 20% to 30%, Nikkei has
learned, in what could become a link in Japan's sustainable renewable energy
efforts.

Wholly owned recycling subsidiary Shinryo developed the technology, which turns
sealant used to bond solar panels' components into gas at high temperatures.
This allows materials such as glass, silver, copper and aluminum to be more
easily recovered.

The importance of recycling old solar panels has grown as the shift to
renewable energy produces ever greater amounts of waste that contains otherwise
usable materials.

Recovered glass will be reused for glass fiber insulation, and the metals will
be recycled for various purposes. About 99% of panel material can be reused.

Compared with the traditional recycling method of pulverizing panels to extract
materials, the new technology is easier to operate continuously, helping reduce
costs, the company says."
