"A small town in southern Spain, Almendralejo, has recently been rattled by a
scandal as twenty-eight teenage girls — ages 11 to 17 — received naked photos
of themselves.
Only none of them had ever taken such pictures.
The original images were taken from the girls’ Instagram accounts without their
knowledge or consent, altered using an AI-powered ‘nudifying’ image generator
and then distributed among their classmates via messaging apps like WhatsApp
and Telegram.
One of the girls’ parents said the perpetrators tried to blackmail her daughter
and demanded money not to distribute them. Another claimed that the boy who
created the image told her daughter that he had done ‘things’ with it.
Local law enforcement initiated an investigation into this incident, and at
least eleven boys — some reportedly as young as 12 — have been identified as
being involved in creating and disseminating these explicit images. The
authorities said they might’ve also reached internet portals like Onlyfans.
But as disturbing as this case is, AI-generated nudes, better known as
‘deepfakes’, are neither new nor particularly rare.
Over the last couple of years, I received dozens of messages both from women
who fell victim to this disgusting practice and from people who know someone it
happened to. In some cases, the deepfakes were used for blackmail. In some
others, they were posted on social media platforms for personal revenge.
There’ve been several deepfake scandals involving female celebrities, too.
And by the looks of it, this epidemic of sexual exploitation and harassment
using AI-generated images is only about to get
worse."
