"It is a virus you have never heard of, and it is rampaging across NSW in big
numbers. It is very likely you have had it before.
Human metapneumovirus or hMPV, was detected in 1168 people last week. Influenza
was detected by PCR in 1424 people, while respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV,
registered 436 cases, according to NSW Health data.
HMPV is on a steep trajectory – over the preceding two weeks, 648 cases were
detected, then 1008 – although experts say many who contract the virus will not
seek a test.
A spokesperson for NSW Health said testing for hMPV was sometimes not performed
if a sample was positive for COVID or influenza. As a result, case numbers were
“likely to be underestimated”.
University of NSW Professor William Rawlinson, who specialises in virology and
molecular biology, told the Herald hMPV was more severe this year, in part
because of the removal of COVID mitigations such as masking.
“It is a virus that can give you a fairly severe illness,” Rawlinson said."
