"Did you recently see that news article about the Michigan school mural that
was forcibly taken down? If not, I’ll give you a quick run-through: it was a
mural that was painted by a teenage girl as part of an art contest.
Parents saw trans and pride flags and went ballistic, verbally berating the
girl, and accusing her of witchcraft. The girl tearfully explained it was a
mural meant to make everyone feel welcome, but that fell on deaf ears.
After the petulant, hateful behavior of the parents and a court case, the mural
was forcibly taken down. If I were that child, I’d be traumatized for life by
the sheer hatred shown to me by parents claiming to “protect” kids.
Scarily, this is still better than how it used to be.
When I was young, there was nothing like a Trans Pride banner in school. Even
if you knew you were queer, it was rare to be able to talk about it. Being gay
started to be okay in the early aughts in my area, but we still had so far to
go.
As someone who’s been through the American school system and sees the laws
passed against trans people, I feel it’s my duty to give parents of trans kids
survival tip talking points that I wish someone would have told me."
