"Year four of the pandemic and schools are reopening with an almost 100pc
increase in confirmed cases of the new SARS-Cov-2 Eris variant. There is also
the potentially “considerably” more immune-evasive BA.2.86 circulating
globally.
With worldwide surveillance dismantled, there’s insufficient data to establish
prevalence or severity of new variants. We’re flying blind, but a tenfold
increase in Covid outbreaks in hospitals and care homes since July should be
sounding alarms.
Instead, chief medical officer Professor Breda Smyth appeared on RTÉ,
reassuring us the pandemic’s over.
Fact check: The World Health Organisation (WHO) said in May that Covid-19 was
no longer a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, stressing: “This
does not mean the pandemic itself is over.”
WHO director Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned: “The worst thing countries
could do now is tell people Covid is nothing to worry about.”"
