"A 95-year-old man who counts a 1926 Whippet as his first car and once
delivered goods using a horse and cart is being lauded as one of the oldest
people in Australia to own and drive an electric vehicle.
Chas Renner, from Perth, says more older drivers should consider swapping to an
electric car to unlock significant petrol savings.
His call comes after a year of record sales for electric vehicles in Australia,
with battery-powered cars making up more than eight per cent of new vehicles
sold between April and June.
The former electrician and milkman said he was inspired to look for a small
electric car after his son and daughter-in-law purchased a Tesla Model 3 last
year.
Janet Renner said her father-in-law did not seem impressed with their vehicle
at first but “next thing we know, he’d gone off to MG to put his name on a wait
list”.
Renner said he chose an MG SZ EV for its smaller size and regularly covers
300km a week in his new vehicle.
“When someone says ‘what are you doing getting an electric car at your age’ I
tell them when I was 15 I got a part-time job in Fremantle in a horse and cart
making deliveries around the town,” he said.
“I didn’t get my own car until probably best part of 10 years later and I’ve
had a lot of cars since and I’m going out with an electric one.”"
