"Hamsa Puthalakath has a choice each morning: spend at least 90 minutes
catching two buses from his home in East Keilor to La Trobe University in
Bundoora or drive himself and be there in just 35.
Like seven out of 10 Melburnians, he reaches for his keys.
“I’d like to use public transport because it’s less impactful environmentally …
but that takes one and a half hours,” he said.
The biochemistry lecturer gave up on buses altogether after unreliable services
burnt him one too many times last year, when a journey took more than two
hours.
“I thought: OK that happens. The second time I went to catch the same bus in
the morning, and it never arrived, and the third time the same thing happened,”
Puthalakath said. “It’s shambolic – I just gave up.”
But overhauling the city’s unloved bus network to provide fast and frequent
services could save people like Puthalakath from making 100 million car trips
every year, according to a new report to be released by the Committee for
Melbourne on Thursday."
