"When customers approach William Barros’ cash register and ask how much they’ll
have to pay for one sheet of paper or a single pencil, he lets out a long
exhale.
“I don’t know. A penny?” Barros said. “Show me a handful, and I’ll give you a
price.”
That’s the prevailing ethos at SCRAP, the 47-year-old art supply nonprofit in
San Francisco where Barros works as the depot manager. A thrift store, art
school and recycling center rolled into one, SCRAP’s Bayview warehouse is the
hub for a wider arts program — the nonprofit runs workshops, sends supplies to
after-school programs and teaches fashion design. It also sells tons and tons
of donated art gear, for
cheap."
