"I had a conversation with one of my customers this week. I sell books. I
support the lawsuits against my home state of Texas by publishers, educators,
and my colleagues. Our argument is that book rating systems like the one
pitched by Gov. Greg Abbott, are unconstitutional.
The counter argument is that it’s designed to ban “sexually explicit material.”
The customer I spoke to was salty about my beliefs. I’m used to it, I’m vocal
about them, and I live in the Florida of the Southwest.
His argument was that schools banning books that were objectionable, isn’t the
same as book burning.
Sure. There’s a marked difference in being a school board member with no
background in education or books deciding arbitrarily something is
inappropriate; and setting a book on fire. But it’s damn close.
What makes me say that?
Die Deutsche Studentenschaft.
The German Student Union."
