'Australian scientists have been given more than $3 million in federal
government funding to continue working on a project that aims to grow plants on
the Moon.
Scientists from the Queensland University of Technology, RMIT University, the
Australian National University (ANU) and Israel's Ben Gurion University are
working with Australian company Lunaria One on the project, known as Australian
Lunar Experiment Promoting Horticulture (ALEPH).
The goal is to be able to grow plants on the lunar surface within four years,
which they hope will in turn allow for the development of food, medicine and
oxygen in the hostile environment.
"The project is intended as a small step to support NASA's Artemis program, but
in many ways represents a bold near-term leap for Australia. The award of this
grant helps us towards this goal," Lunaria One co-founder Graham Dorrington
said.
"We aim to demonstrate that a plant growth chamber can be transported to the
Moon, successfully germinate and grow plants, and return images and data of
this growth."'
