"Dylan Mulvaney has unfortunately been at the center of this sort of faux
controversy for quite some time now. I say faux controversy simply because the
outrage against her that we are seeing form the right is nothing short of
absurd. The only reason why the right even attacked her, to begin with, was
because she was sent a single can of Bud Light as part of a promotion.
Many on the right liked to act as though she was being promoted by
Anheuser-Busch but this is not the case at all. There was no major ad campaign
featuring the personalized Dylan Mulvaney can, it was just a single thing they
sent her as a promotion and that’s it.
In spite of all of this, it sent the right into a frenzy where they ended up
sending bomb threats to multiple Anheuser-Busch facilities and harassing Dylan
herself. She has recently spoken more about this and what she said is nothing
short of telling.
She specifically called out Bud Light and Anheuser-Busch for not supporting her
at all during the time in which the harassment and outrage against her was at
its peak. In her Instagram video, she said:
“For a company to hire a trans person and then to not publicly stand by them
is worse, in my opinion, than not hiring a trans personal at all because it
gives customers permission to be as transphobic and hateful as they want,”
I find this statement by Dylan to be particularly interesting because this is
more or less what more radical queer people and writers have talked about in
the last few years and that’s the idea of rainbow capitalism. Sure, you might
get brands like Anheuser-Busch who may do some performative stunt to support
queer people but at the end of the day, this is all a play and they rarely have
any real commitment to supporting queer liberation.
At the end of the day for these companies, all they care about is their bottom
line and we saw that perfectly encapsulated with Dylan. She was under attack
from the right, stalked, and even harassed and the company that worked with her
did nothing to help her with all of this even though it wasn’t her fault at
all."
