"Since Australia’s debut in the Eurovision Song Contest eight years ago, we
have fielded a raft of ballad-singing solo acts, including Guy Sebastian,
Jessica Mauboy and Kate Miller-Heidke. And while Dami Im came close, placing
second out of 42 countries in 2016, none has yet brought the elusive Eurovision
trophy down under.
Now, in a strategic swerve, organisers have revealed they are sending the
Perth-based synth-metal band Voyager to Liverpool in May. “Sometimes Eurovision
is silly in a serious way, and sometimes people go, wow, that’s incredible,
we’ve never seen that,” creative director Paul Clarke says. “And I think a lot
of Eurovision success is about, wow, we’ve never seen that.”
Voyager – made up of vocalist Danny Estrin (who also plays keytar, a
synthesizer worn with a guitar strap), guitarists Simone Dow and Scott Kay,
drummer Ash Doodkorte and bass guitarist Alex Canion – appeared on the radar of
Australia’s Eurovision team several years ago but rose to prominence at last
year’s Australia Decides pre-competition.
The band placed second out of 11 artists, a field which included 2017
Eurovision entrant Isiah Firebrace,
Australian Idol alumnus Pauline
Curuenavuli and the eventual winner, former
The X-Factor contestant Sheldon
Riley."
