"Imagine feeling that you can walk into the house of one of the highest elected
officials in the land and use violence to bring them down, even after the
events of January 6th failed in the exact same goal. The brutal attack on Paul
Pelosi and the lack of outrage, tact, and condemnation by GOP officials prove
that America continues to be a safe space for right-wing terrorism.

It’s increasingly clear that the country and its mainstream institutions will
continue to coddle, infantilize and downplay MAGA extremism that threatens our
democracy simply because the perpetrators are white conservatives.

The pipeline from right-wing disinformation and conspiracy theories to violence
is clear and direct. Just look at the case of David DePape, 42, who violently
attacked and injured 82-year-old Paul Pelosi with a hammer on Friday morning.
He allegedly shouted, “Where is Nancy? Where is Nancy?” An examination of
DePape’s online posts revealed that he shared hundreds of memes and articles
from right-wing personalities that “were filled with screeds against Jews,
Black people, Democrats, the media and transgender.” That describes what has
become a Republican Bingo card. He also shared conspiracy theories about
vaccines, the 2020 election, and the January 6th attack, which Tucker Carlson
of Fox said was a “false flag” operation.

DePape was simply following in the footsteps of armed, MAGA violent
insurrectionists who were incited by Trump to engage in a coup against
democracy. Some of them were there with premeditated intent to hunt and kill
Vice President Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi. Thankfully, DePape failed to finish
the job. It always bears reminding that the Republican National Committee
refers to these insurrectionists as “ordinary citizens” who were engaged in a
“legitimate political discourse.”"
