"As somebody who has reviewed a stand up act with only four people in
the audience, I can attest to the fact that laughing all alone isn’t
always the easiest thing in the world. The experience of laughter is
largely a social thing, which is why ever since The Hank McCune Show
first brought canned laughter to television in 1950, producers have
relied on a mixture of live audience laughter and pre-recorded reactions
to get their home audience laughing. But laugh tracks have long divided
audiences and critics alike."
A nice article on the classic issue of laugh tracks.
