Though I agree that the Authors Guild is behind the times and not
representing their authors's best interests, the motives imputed to them
by the Techdirt article are unfair and untrue.
The first question you need to ask to understand Authors Guild is what
is the predominant age of its members? Most of them are older people who
only understand the old model. Second, people in the US are desperate to
make money, any money, to get by. They would also like to get by without
being forced into slave labour. The new system does not appear to offer
much hope in the way of pay cheques. Finally, the US is a country
obsessed by status, fame, and fortune. The old system clearly seems to
offer that possibility, the new system does not.
