"A study about sexual similarity gets framed as a major new finding of
sex difference."
Journalists are looking for a hook, and "study reveals males and females
are very similar, just as suspected" is a classic "dog bites man" story
- it's not news. So the speculation at the end of the original
publication is a lifeline for the journalist - they can charge off into
whatever speculation they think the readers would like to hear.
