"After Tyrone Hayes said that a chemical was harmful, its maker pursued him."
A depressing read - this is one of many such fights where organisations with
vested interests and plenty of money seek to cast as much doubt as possible on
any negative consequences or risks caused by their products or actions.
We've been through this over and over with tobacco smoke, leaded petrol,
Thalidomide, Agent Orange, DDT, Paraquat and now carbon emissions.
The inverse also occurs, of course, where scientific evidence that certain
drugs or actions are less harmful than claimed is routinely minimised or
ignored.
It's not clear what can be done unfortunately, since bureaucrats and
politicians are usually more influenced by those with power and money than by
good science.
