'This is the third installment in our three part mini-series exploring
the Damsel in Distress trope in video games. In this episode we examine
the rare Dude in Distress role reversal and then take a look at the use
of "ironic sexism" in retro inspired indie and mobile games. We conclude
with an investigation of some titles that attempt to subvert or
deconstruct the traditional damsel narrative.'
The final episode is possibly the best one yet. Includes a cool
proposal for a game plot!
Some games I enjoy that she didn't mention include:
Costume Quest in
which you pick right at the start of the game whether to play as the
twin brother or sister, and then rescue the one you didn't pick when
they get kidnapped, then after the rescue (which is not the end of the
game) continue playing as both twins.
The
Mass Effect series and
Shadowrun Returns, in which not only can
you play as either a male or female protagonist and select any mix of
male or female companions, but the various subplots that involve
rescuing people include both males and females in distress.
